    Description

This large charcoal on paper is a study for the smaller oil on canvas “Bathing women at the beach” (69 x 77 cm) which is still in the private collection of the heirs of Jan Sluijters and on long term loan to the Drents Museum in Assen. A much smaller watercolor study (22,5 x 33 cm) of this painting is in the Caldic Collection Rotterdam and there is at least one other charcoal study of which the measurements are unknown as well as the whereabouts. Although Sluijters has painted many nudes, nudes outside are rare in his oeuvre.

Jan Sluijters along with Gestel and Mondrian belongs to the first early modernists. He trained at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie. He then moved to Paris (1904-1907) where his introduction to the work of Van Gogh, Cézanne and the Fauves, including Gauguin, led to him developing an entirely new visual idiom.
