Description
An exceptional French Three-Piece Clock Garniture
circa 1810 | gilt bronze
This elegant French three-piece clock garniture, dating from around 1810, is crafted in gilt bronze and exemplifies the refined artistry of early 19th-century decorative arts.
The garniture consists of a central mantel clock flanked by a pair of covered vases, each adorned with classical and mythological scenes. The bases of all three pieces are embellished with applied griffins, lending the ensemble a sense of grandeur and mythic symbolism. Â The clock itself features a head of a putto beneath the dial, while the sides are flanked by winged caryatides holding a garland, further enhancing its neoclassical aesthetic. A top the mantel clock, a phoenix rests on a bed of foliage.
The phoenix is a mythological creature who, when it has reached the end of its lifecycle, will build itself a nest and set it aflame. Burning both the nest and itself. From the ashes a new young phoenix is born. The phoenix represents rebirth, transformation and strength.
The clock is equipped with an 8-day movement and strikes on the half hour. The chapter ring is marked with Roman numerals.
This garniture set is a striking example of French Empire design, blending mythological motifs, classical figures, and intricate gilded bronze work to create a harmonious and luxurious ensemble.
